Every fund says it backs founders. The job was to make founders believe it before a single dollar changed hands.

Context

A $50M fund for very early stage Latin American tech startups, launching into one of the foggiest moments the region had seen between founders and venture capital. Money was not scarce. Clarity was.

What Newtopia had was rarer than capital. Six partners who were entrepreneurs first and investors second, people who had built and sold companies before they ever wrote a cheque. Credibility was never the variable.

So the question was not who to convince. It was who to talk to. Of every audience a fund could court, the one that decided everything was the founder, and what a founder needed to hear was that Newtopia brought network and hands on support, not just a wire transfer. That story had to be told in a voice more rebellious than the category allows itself. The brand wanted to stand out, which meant it had to sound like nobody else.

What I did

I came in through Funka Brands as a copywriter in October 2021 and joined the team in house a few months later, staying until April 2023. My remit was the brand positioning strategy for the region: defining the voice, the storytelling and the narrative that would make Newtopia legible to founders across nine countries.

That narrative became pieces. The one pager, investor reports, pitch decks, newsletters, social media, institutional messaging and the pitches that went out to press. I ran media relations with international agencies, and I coached the founders of 51 portfolio startups on their own narratives through group workshops and one to one sessions.

But the real vehicle was not a document. It was a chain of events, and the word that held all of it together was community. Academy Weeks, Demo Days, LP Days, workshops and Summits, online and in person, in Purmamarca, Punta del Este, Miami and Buenos Aires. I led communications across all of them: storytelling, audiovisual production, speaker support, content, amplification and partner relationships. What came out the other side was a community with its own identity and its own pride, and belonging to it became a reason to choose Newtopia over any other fund.

After I left

Six months after my last day, Newtopia went up on a screen in Times Square during New York Tech Week, backing the Latin founders shaping the future. I had nothing to do with that placement. I had a lot to do with the brand that was on it.
